COVID-19 Leaves Sports World Turned Upside Down

It’s been a very puzzling month for those who have been infatuated with the world of sports their entire life. Yes, there have been lockouts, shortened seasons, tragedy, and moved games. Despite that, none of us were prepared for what occurred the night of the Utah Jazz VS Oklahoma City Thunders game on March 11, 2020. The entire world felt like it stopped, the NBA had an immediate shutdown as the Jazz’ Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19. The NHL and MLB followed, with leagues across the world shutting down. European fútbol, the XFL, the MLS, and many other leagues also were suspended. I speak for sports fans when I say, it felt like the heavens came crashing down.

A Shock to Content Creators

People think immediately about the players and the staff when they think of those affected by the sports world pausing. How will they get paid? When will we see them play again? We all wonder and ask if we will see these leagues finish up their season. This discussion often leaves the content creators covering teams who depend on the sports world for their next paycheck. These creators are often not affiliated with teams either and are not compensated by these teams as the players and staff are.

To all the fellow content creators who are out there feeling like they lost something they loved? I feel that too. This isn’t easy, and everyone in the sports world is affected, not just the guys on the field of play.

How to Get Through This

The world feels a little bit slower, doesn’t it? Time isn’t consumed by your favorite squad having a memorable game. Take advantage of this time you suddenly have. Read a book about sports, watch some old games, or if you’re an athlete. light workouts to stay in motion.

Don’t feel as if the time left behind by sports now should just be hours to mope and mourn. Instead, you should do your best to be productive and visit old memories to keep your sports crave satisfied and perhaps find some much-needed nostalgia. Maybe you watch the first sporting event you’ve ever gone to. Perhaps your first taste at playoff success. Sports may be on pause for now, but if you love it enough, you’ll find it somehow, no matter what.

Sports: A Societal Anchor

People at times may not always understand the fundamental purpose sports serves in our lives. It’s an old saying, you only miss something when it’s gone. Now that sports are on pause, people will appreciate the normalcy we often overlook when it comes to sports.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s sunny or snowing, there’s always usually some form of sport you can watch that’s live. That’s simply not the case at the moment, and it’s something that makes even non-sports fans feel off.

The whole world feels at pause when sports are at pause. Let’s appreciate that game that brings us joy so that when we do get it back, we can love and appreciate it as if it never truly left us

I know that these are tough times, however, the sports world is simply on pause. It’s not gone, and at the end of the day, it will make our bond to it even stronger.
